Mammoth Cave National Park Expedition - Sara

The Mammoth Cave National Park Expedition was scheduled for September 30-October 4 but was cut short because of inclement weather. Thunderstorms were predicted for Sunday and Monday, so we broke up camp after Saturday's hike. A kayaking trip on the Green River was scheduled for Sunday but we weren't able to make it because of the weather.

To get to the Mammoth Cave Visitor's Center and Cave Tour we had to cross the Green River on a ferry. The ferry ride was short, and we never had to wait long to cross. The ferry can hold up to three small cars. We set up camp in the Maple Springs group campsite Thursday afternoon. Friday was the 4-hour historic cave tour which everyone enjoyed.

Saturday's hike was the 7 miles North Loop of the Big Hollow Trail which was within walking distance from our campsite to the trailhead. There were more mountain bikers than hikers on this trail, but it was interesting to see all the bikes. We had lunch after the hike back at the campsite.

Participants in this multi chapter event (Highland Rim, Nashville, Murfreesboro) organized by Patty Deen were Doug Burroughs, Maggie Cox, Chuck Deen, Patty Deen, Joe Gonzales, Susan Gonzales, Joan Hartvigsen, Debbie Owens, Sara Pollard, Diana Richter, John Ruth, Cynthia Skidmore, Glenda Stephens and Gloria Dale Williams.

So sorry the weather didn't cooperate, but at least caving is all "indoors".
