There were 17 hikers who attended the camping and hiking trip at Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We camped at the Cades Cove campground and our first hike was Friday on part of the Rich Mountain loop and we went to the John Oliver cabin and back. Saturday, we started our hike at the Cades Cove picnic area and hiked the Anthony Creek trail to Bote Mountain and on to Rocky Top where we had our lunch. It was a steep climb there and back, but we had wonderful views. Sunday's hike was driving the Cades Cove loop to the Abrams Falls trailhead. We saw 6 bears. Three out in the field and three along the loop road. After Abrams Falls we spent some time at the Visitors Center before heading back to camp. Monday we hiked the Middle Prong trail at the end of the Tremont Institute Road. We had great weather and saw deer in our campsite. Joan Hartvigsen of the Highland Rim chapter did an excellent job organizing this trip. Hikers were Joe Campbell, Cathy Conley, Chuck Deen, Patty Deen, Jane Ellett, Wendy Fish (who took beautiful photos), Judith Fries, Joe Gonzales, Susan Gonzales, Joan Hartvigsen, Charles Key, Debbie Owens, Joni Perrine, Sara Pollard, Georgeanne Ross, Michel Travers, and Kathy Woods.
