Duck River Paddle - Sara

There were 9 kayakers on the Duck River paddling trip. This was a joint event with the Murfreesboro and Highland Rim chapters led by Jim Barritt. We put in at the TWRA Boat Launch Access on Sowell Mill Pike (Leftwich Bridge) in Columbia and set up a shuttle for our takeout at Howard Bridge Road. We paddled past high bluffs and could see the entrance to the cave on the Cheek's Bend trail. It rained hard on our way to Columbia, but by the time we got to the put in the rain had stopped. We enjoyed an overcast sky and cool breeze most of the way. Kayakers were Jim Barritt, Joe Campbell, Cathy Conley, Wendy Fish, Joan Hartvigsen, Marsha Medford, Sara Pollard, Marietta Poteet, and Jan Safavi.

Duck River Float - Sara

There were 30 kayakers on this joint activity with the Highland Rim chapter. We met at 9:00 am below Normandy Dam to start our 5.2 mile paddle to Dement Bridge. We pretty much had the river to ourselves since it was a partly cloudy day and there were a few menacing rain clouds in the sky.

We had lunch at Cortner Mill Dam since we had to portage there anyway. This was a nice shaded area to take a break. Those attending from Murfreesboro were Sara Pollard, Wayne Yancey, Joan Bentley, Joan’s friend Kara, George Thomson, Tim Smith and Gary McClain. Also Jean Breuer of Franklin who’s attended several of our outings.

Duck River Kayak - Tony

Today was yet another beautiful day for a kayak float! I joined the Highland Rim chapter of the Tennessee Trails Association and THIRTY others for this wonderful cruise down the Duck River.

We put in a Normandy Dam in Normandy, Tennessee, floated to Cortner Mill where we had to portage due to the dam. We ate lunch here and socialized, re-boarded our boats and floated down to Dement Bridge where we lost a couple of people who needed to get home.

From Dement we coasted down to Three Forks Bridge where our trip ended. It was a total of (plus or minus) 8 miles and the weather cooperated nicely. It was hot, but not as hot as the mid 90's that the guru's were predicting.
