Sewanee Perimeter Trail - Sara

We had eight hikers to take on the 14 mile hike on  the Perimeter Trail in Sewanee. We started at Lake Cheston and made the loop passing Clara's Point, Elliott Point, and had lunch at King's Farm. King's Farm is a good place to eat because there are several picnic tables. Then on to Dotson's Point and a break at the Forestry Cabin. We passed KA Point as well but the sign is missing. We got to Lake Cheston around 4:00 pm  to finish our hike. The temperature got into the 80's but we had a breeze most of the time. The wildflowers were abundant and the small creeks were pretty. We had beautiful views along as well.  Hikers were Glenda Brewster, Susan Gonzales, Joan Hartvigsen, Sara Pollard, Marietta Poteet, Marge Schumacher, Gloria Dale Williams and Wayne Yancey.

Sewanee Perimeter - Sara

We had a total of five hikers and had a great hike!  The trail was beautiful, well marked and maintained.  There were fallen trees but had been cleared from the trails.  In some places, you could still smell the sawdust where fallen trees had been cut away from the trail.  Hikers met at the Lake Cheston parking lot and began the hike at Roark’s Cove road. Lunch was enjoyed on the picnic tables at Kings Farm. Hikers were Cathleen Close,  Joan Hartvigsen, Celia Jeffery, Debra Swaim and Ruth Wells.

Sewanee Perimeter Trail - Tony

Julie & I joined a few folks from the Tennessee Trails Association for a great hike along a portion of the 21 mile perimeter trail at Sewanee. We hiked from Green's View to Piney Point and back to Green's View via Shakerag Hollow.

It rained just a tiny bit on us as we were climbing back up to Green's View. The water was fantastic, with a heavy flow. Everywhere a waterfall. Sara Pollard, Tony Jones, Julie Cordova, Jenny Jacobs, Ann Ford and Lora McBride from the Murfreesboro Chapter and Joan Hartvigsen from the Highland Rim Chapter, enjoyed this beautiful day!

Sewanne Perimeter Trail - Jenny

The Murfreesboro Chapter of the TTA held its first hike of the Fall season on a beautiful Saturday September 7 2013 at Sewanne's Perimeter Trail. The group of hikers included leader Jenny Jacobs, Nabil Wakid, Ann Ford, Mary Belle Ginanni, and Highland Rim member Shelley McCoy.

The hike began at Green's View overlook  and stayed atop the hollow hugging close to the ridge with fabulous blufftop views. At Beckwith's Point we discovered over twenty names and home towns and states of coal miners carved into blufftop limetone. Underneath this bluff are old coal mines where these miners worked and some perished. The hike continued around to the University Domain Gates and then returned by going down into the Shakerag Hollow itself where we were blessed with spectacular old growth trees and lovely weather.

The hike ended up being a little over five miles. We then had a fine lunch at the Blue Chair Cafe and rounded it out with a mini tour of the grand Episcopal Cathedral on campus and the lovely quaint Episcopal cemetery with its charming old tombstones and graceful old trees and shrubs. Sweet hike,

Sewanee Perimeter Hike - Jim

Lake Cheston, Morgan’s Steep, Proctor Hall, Memorial Cross Sewanee Perimeter Hike Report
Submitted by Jim Schroeder

On Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, seven hikers from towns across the Mid-state including Kelso, Winchester, Estill Springs, Altamont, Tullahoma, and Murfreesboro, first gathered at the Blue Chair on the University of the South Campus for a breakfast fare before embarking on a perimeter trail hike from Lake Cheston back down to the breakfast spot. The trekkers were Erik Ludvigsen, Patricia Stewart, Joan Hartvigsen, Sandy Hartstar and her delightful 10 year old granddaughter, Anna Watkins, and Jim Schroeder with the group being led by Cathleen Close of the Highland Rim Chapter, and with Carol Sampson of Sewanee joining us along the way.   Starting at the Cheston Lake Trail, we soon were treated to the headwaters of Wiggins Creek crashing over a small cataract and plunging down its gorge to merge with Boiling Fork and eventually emptying into Tim Fords Lake. The weather was perfect for hiking and sun lit overlooks provided glimpses of fall color and spectacular views along the way. The small streams were rushing over cascades or just gurgling over their stony floors. The rock formations were awesome and intriguing, and the scramble up the wall at Proctor Hall was challenging, especially to the writer whose knees didn’t want to bend to make some of the toe holds. Thanks to the hike leader’s able assistance, all made the scramble without mishap. The snack pause at the Memorial Cross provided some moments of reflection as well as just plain camaraderie amongst the hikers. Of course no Sewanee hike would be complete without the third component of the “eat, hike, and eat” sequence and the approximate 3-mile trek ended with lunch at Julia’s.  Special thanks to Cathleen Close for planning and leading this most pleasant and exciting hike and which the writer highly recommends it to all who have never experienced this section of the Sewanee Perimeter Trail.
