This hike was originally scheduled for Saturday, January 24, but because of the predicted ice and snow for the weekend, we changed the hike to the day before on Friday. It was a beautiful clear day along Cordell Hull Lake. Cordell Hull Lake is a reservoir in the Cumberland River impounded by Cordell Hull Dam. We started the hike at the Defeated Creek Park trailhead and along the way we had a choice to take an easy section (1.0) or a difficult section (.5). We chose the difficult section that goes closer to the lake but we managed the steep and rocky sections. There's new signs and benches that weren't there the last time we hiked this trail. We enjoyed lunch at the campground and Alan joined us since he had started the hike at the Tater Look Overlook. We ended the hike at the Tater Knob Overlook with beautiful views of Cordell Hull Lake and the dam. Hikers were Jay Brain, Jean Breuer, Alan Nguyen, Sara Pollard and Todd S.
Mission: TTA brings people together through hiking—to enjoy nature, promote well-being, support trails, and build lasting friendships.

Bearwaller Gap Hike -Sara
We had four hikers to hike the Bearwaller Gap trail in Carthage. The weather was a little chilly to start but by the time we finished it had warmed up in the 40's. We were not able to set up a shuttle so we started our hike at the Tater Knob Overlook, had lunch at the backcountry campsite and returned to the overlook. We passed an old homestead and there was English ivy covering a lot of the trees. We had nice views of the Cumberland River almost the whole time. Hikers were Jay Brain, Jim Barritt, and Chris Manzione.

Bearwaller Gap
We had 12 hikers on the Bearwaller Gap hike near Carthage. Sara Pollard led the hike that started at the Defeated Creek campground area and we hiked 6 miles to the Tater Knob Overlook. It was cloudy all day but we still had beautiful views of Cordell Hull Lake and Dam all along the way. We stopped for lunch at the Two Prong backcountry campsite which has a picnic table, fire pit, shelter and outhouse. The trail was muddy and slippery in some spots and everyone managed the shallow creek crossings. We had hikers from our chapter as well as Highland Rim and Sumner. Hikers were Jay Brain, Jeanne Conaster, Eleanor Gilchrist, Marie Gleeson, Jon Palmer, Joni Perrine, Sara Pollard, Georgeanne Ross, Jan Safavi, Sigren Watson, Ruth Wells and Wayne Yancey.

Bearwaller Gap - Sara
It was a beautiful morning to hike the 6 mile Bearwaller Gap Trail along Center Hill Lake. We left cars at the Tator Knob Overlook and began our hike near the Defeated Creek campground. There were beautiful views of the lake the whole way. We stopped for lunch at the backcountry campsite and then started the uphill climb to finish our hike. We finished the hike at the Tator Knob Overlook with outstanding views of the lake and Cordell Hull Dam. We didn’t encounter anyone on the trail except for a deer. It was a perfect day for a hike though. Hikers were Danielle Harrell and her sweet dog Dusty, Sara Pollard and Jan Safavi.

Bear Waller Gap - Tony
Rainy Days and Saturday's....that is what we had at Bear Waller Gap. We hiked the first three of the six miles in a steady rain and after stopping to eat, it slowed a bit and then slowed some more and finally stopped.
This was a beautiful hike. The trail meanders around the shore of the Cordell Hull Lake from the Defeated Creek Campground and works its way up some steep hills, and some level walking areas to the Tater Knob end, six miles later.
the mist and fog gave a surreal look to the water and the trail was muddy and slick in parts but all six of us made it just fine. The day was extremely nice (despite the rain) for a Saturday in January so that made the rain a minor irritation but not really a hindrance to our comfort.
Six of us from the Tennessee Trails Murfreesboro Chapter (Sara Pollard, Tammy Day, Nabil Wakid, Mary Belle Ginanni, Roy Duncan and Tony Jones) braved the rain and enjoyed this wonderful hike.
