Chilly Chili Hike - Sara

The Marietta Poteet’s 25th annual and last Chilly Chili Hike. There were 44 people who hiked and about 65 people for chili.  We met at the Sewanee Gates at the Shakerag trailhead and hiked Shakerag Hollow on the Sewanee Perimeter trail and returned on the Beckwith Point trail. The hike was about 3.5 miles. After the hike we went to Marietta's home in Clifftops to enjoy chili and all the fixins. We also had a champagne toast for Jim Poteet, Marietta's husband who passed away last summer and organized the first chili hike. There were hikers from several chapters - Highland Rim, Murfreesboro, Nashville, Sumner Trails, Scenic City, and Columbia Franklin. Hikers from our Murfreesboro chapter were Jay Brain, Anna Lina Buckley, Joe Campbell, Lora McBride, Sara Pollard, Georganne Ross, Lynn Rosser, Tim Rosser, Martina Terrazas and her son Eduardo.

Chilly Chili Hike

 

Even though this was the 22^nd annual "chili hike", the hike was cancelled due to the heavy rain. The plan was to hike Shakerag Hollow to Beckwith's Point in Sewanee, but the rain was not letting up. The chili lunch wasn't cancelled though, and we met for lunch at Jim and Marietta's house in Monteagle. We had 25 folks enjoying lunch from three different chapters. Murfreesboro chapter members attending were Jay Brain, Joe Campbell, Katy Ginanni, Sara Pollard, Georganne Ross and Lynn Rosser.

Chilly Chili Hike 2023- Marietta

The Poteet’s 21st annual Chilly Chili hike occurred today. We had 51 people hike the Grundy Day Loop and 57 people in attendance for Chili Lunch. It was so much fun reconnecting with others we haven’t seen in a while. Hope we can continue to host this event for years to come.

2022 Chilly Chili Hike - Sara

There were 25 hikers for the 19th Annual Chilly Chili hike and lunch hosted by the Jim and Marietta Poteet of Monteagle. The number of hikers was limited to 25 due to COVID. We hiked the 6-mile trail out to Lake Dimmick starting on the Mountain Goat Trail on Highway 41A. It was cold but we soon warmed up and there were a few icy spots. Hikers were from the Highland Rim, Nashville, and Columbia/Franklin chapters. Those attending from the Murfreesboro chapter were Jay Brain, Joe Campbell, Sara Pollard and Georganne Ross.

Chilly Chili Hike 2020- Sara

There were 26 hikers on the Chilly Chili hike Saturday.  We hiked the Caldwell Rim trail near the Perimeter Trail in Sewanee  and views were beautiful. We had 3 stream crossings that were easy to cross. Lunch was afterwards at the Jim and Marietta Poteet's house in Monteagle.  From our chapter were Jeanne Conatser, Sara Kennedy, and Sara Pollard.

Chilly Chili Hike 2019 - Sara

Chilly Chili Hike January 26, 2019

I don't know how many hikers we had but I think around 25. Marietta Poteet of the Highland Rim chapter led the hike and she was already on the second page when new member Georgeanne Ross and I of the Murfreesboro chapter signed in. This was a joint hike with Highland Rim and Nashville chapter. 

The weather was perfect and the unfinished Sherwood Forest trail is stunning! There are views all along the way and beautiful rock formations.  The trail is white blazed for the first mile and then the pick polka dot flags and are easy to follow. There's already some stone steps in place and this will be a nice trail when it's finished. After the hike we had  chili at the Poteets' house in Monteagle and everyone enjoyed the  beautiful day hiking with other TTA members.

Sixteenth Annual Chilly Chili Hike

Sixteenth Annual Chilly Chili Hike was hosted by Jim and Marietta Poteet with 32 hikers and more attending the lunch. We hiked a 3+ mile trail section (rated moderate due to the trail being partially complete)of the new acquisition of the South Cumberland State Park in Sherwood Forest. We hiked to a beautiful overlook of Lost Cove and to a natural bridge. Then we hiked the partially complete trail around the ridge where we saw more spectacular views. 

We went to the Poteet’s Monteagle home for chili, cornbread, brownies and fixin’s. Afterwards we went to the Sewanee Natural Bridge, Templeton Library and St Mary’s Convent. Beautiful day to be outside with dear friends from Nashville, Murfreesboro and Highland Rim Chapters of Tennessee Trails Association. Life is good. Keep on hiking.

15th Annual Chilly Chili Hike

This was our 15th annual Chilly Chili hike with the Highland Rim chapter. There were over 40 hikers who met at the trailhead parking lot at 41A in Sewanee. We started out on the graveled Goat Mountain Trail for a short distance and turned into the Lake Dimmick Trail. This trail took us on a flat and easy hike to beautiful Lake Dimmick. After getting to the lake, we took a short break and enjoyed the company of other hikers. Then we hiked back to the trailhead and departed for Jim and Marietta Poteet’s Monteagle home in the Clifftops community. We enjoyed homemade chili and lots of desserts and side items. Carpooling from Murfreesboro were Bill Ford,  Bob Goodwin, Ann Jacobs, Sandra Parker, Sara Pollard and Nabil Wakid.

Chilly Chili Hike 2015 - Sara

There were around 40 hikers at the Poteet’s annual Chilly Chili hike January 24.  Snow had fallen the night but the roads were clear.  The hike was beautiful in the snow with a stream along the trail and views of Lost Cove.  This is a new trail  that’s not part of the Perimeter Trail, but does cross over the Perimeter Trail.  We parked in a large parking lot across from Shenigans and walked a little way to the trailhead.  We did this because there’s limited parking at  the actual trailhead.  After the hike, we went to the Poteet’s house in Monteagle for a delicious chili lunch.  Hikers attending from our chapter were Ann Jacobs, Sara Pollard,  Nabil Wakid, Jennifer Zahn, and guests Elizabeth Fahey, Javed Rizvi, and Cassady Seward.  Chris King from Smyrna and her husband Charles met us at the trailhead. PERFECT day for a hike and to see SNOW.

Poteet Annual Chilly Chili Hike - Marietta

January 25th turned out to be a perfect day for the annual Poteet Chilly Chili hike.  It was cold, blustery, and icy - about 20 degrees.  25 people from several different chapters of The Tennessee Trails Association met at Green’s View, part of the Perimeter Trail, in Sewanee, Tennessee to hike 4 miles on Beckwith Point Trail circling around to the Shakerag Trail.  It was rocky and quite beautiful with ice formations on the bluffs and at least 2 frozen waterfalls.  After the hike we proceeded to the Poteet’s home in Monteagle for Chili and fixin’s and to greet other hikers who were not able to hike with us that day.  It was a day enjoyed by many who are veterans of the Chilly hike and by others who were new to the proceedings.  If you missed it this year, plan on attending next year.

Chilly Chili Hike - Marietta

On Jan. 26, members of the TTA from Nashville, Murfreesboro, Highland Rim, East Tennessee and the Plateau chapters met at the Fiery Gizzard Trailhead for the Poteets 12th annual Chilly Chili Hike to hike in the cold, sunny South Cumberland Park.  Led by Marietta Poteet, we hiked the Grundy Day Loop down to the Fiery Gizzard Trail.  Due to recent heavy rains, the water levels in the 3 rivers along the trails were quite high and quite beautiful.  We had approximately 27 people hiking.  When we arrived at the Fiery Gizzard, we continued over bridges and rocks to end up at Sycamore Falls which was flowing quite rapidly.  There were many photo opportunities.  Returning to the parking lot on the Fiery Gizzard we were able to see where the Park rangers were treating the hemlocks for the Wooley Adelgid.  After returning to the parking lot we all proceeded to the Poteet's home where we enjoyed hot, mild, and vegetarian chili, cornbread, brownies and the other delicious dishes brought by all.  We ended up with about 37 people  total.  It was fun for the Poteets and I hope by all the hikers/eaters.
