Signal Point, Cumberland Trail - Sara

We had four  hikers from our chapter  – Sara Pollard, Rebekah Norman, Wayne Yancey, Jennifer Zahn;  two new hikers who joined us,  Bill Heim and Scott Wieland;  and Jane Ellett from the Soddy Daisy TTA chapter met us at the trailhead.   We left Murfreesboro at 6 am to allow time to be off the trail before dark.  After dropping off a car at Highway 27 (Suck Creek Road), we started our hike at Signal Point on Signal Mountain near Chattanooga.  This is the southern terminus of the Cumberland Trail.   It was cloudy, but the temperature was around 45 degrees.  It was a rocky descent to start our hike but we had beautiful views of Lookout Mountain and the Tennessee River Gorge.  We had an early lunch at Edward’s Point and it started to rain a little bit.  But as soon as we were back on the trail heading toward Mushroom Rock, we were able to shed our rain gear.  We had several creek crossings and Suck Creek at the end of our hike was really flowing.  It’s a beautiful trail, but the white blazes were hard to find in some areas.  It was a challenging hike for  8.5 miles and as Rebekah commented – “we got our money’s worth” on this hike!
