Cumberland Trail 50th Anniversary - Patty

Hikers, trail builders, and supporters from TTA chapters, the Cumberland Trail Conference, and other organizations came together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Cumberland Trail, April 30th. Trail history, development, support, music and hikes were enjoyed at the Head of the Sequatchie facility of the Trail. Pictured are plateau musicians Tater and Friends, Park Manager Bob Fulcher, Trail founder and namesake Justin P. Wilson, State Parks Operations Director Mike Robertson, Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs President Maggie Burns, and oral historian Joey O'Dell. Photos include the "spring" origin of the river as it emerges from a cave and views from the Selby Ridge Lodge. Murfreesboro chapter attendees were Craig and Lora McBride, Sara Pollard, and Patty and Geoff Hull.

Dr. Larry Pounds led a group of eight on a short but informative wildflower hike on the 0.85 Selby Loop trail at Head of Sequatchie Unit of the Cumberland Trail Friday, April 30. Larry's degree is in plant ecology and he advises a number of organizations as well as sits on the board of the Cumberland Trail Conference. He is the author of Wildly Strolling Along about the Cumberland Trail. Hikers saw yellow trillium, mayapple, fire pink, phlox, jack-in-the-pulpit, fleabane  and more. In spite spite of a diligent search we missed out on the bluebells and rare white bluebells that had bloomed a couple of weeks earlier. Pictured are Dr. Pounds, hikers, and various flowers. The trail marker is based on a drawing dating back more than a thousand years  which was found in Devilstep Hollow Cave.  The cave is also at Head of the Sequatchie.  Murfreesboro chapter hikers were Patty and Geoff Hull.
