Four TTA members enjoyed a mostly sunny week on the AT from Rock Gap Shelter near Franklin, NC to Fontana Dam, NC. We had a wonderful trip with only two rainy days at the end of the week, tons of wildflowers, a few small animals (again no bears!), a great mid-week breakfast stop at the Whitewater Rafting area of the Nantahala River, amazing views from the balds and good company. We hiked somewhere between 62 and 70 miles, 62 was the amount Diane listed but 70 was the amount Tony decided we had hiked. We saw two different distant wildfires, were buzzed in the night by two low flying planes, and had one pesky Whiporwill wake us too early one morning. The elevation gains were a big challenge but the views were a great reward.
