Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park - Sara

We had 15 hikers on our hike Saturday at Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park in Eva Tennessee. This was a joint event with the Jackson and Highland Rim chapters. Susan Woods of the Jackson chapter led the hike. She's a member of the Friends group and leads many interpretative hikes there. She told us a lot about the history in the area. Since many of the trails were closed due to the tornado damage last fall, she was able to piece together about a 5 mile loop trail and we enjoyed lunch at the backcountry shelter. We also stopped by the rustic cabin overlooking the lake. After the hike some went on to Johnsonville State Historic Park in nearby Camden for more hiking and touring the museum there.

We had 5 campsites reserved at Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park and the sites were on the water overlooking Kentucky Lake (Tennessee River). Some campers went kayaking Friday afternoon and again Sunday morning. We saw ospreys and bald eagles.

Campers were Pat Broadbent, Chuck and Patty Deen, Jane Ellett, Joan Hartvigsen, Melinda Pearson, Joni Perrine, Sara Pollard and Marietta Poteet.  Joining us Saturday for hiking were William Ball, Steve Cole, Abraham Santhosh, Terry Warren and Susan Woods with her dog Ginger. Tennessee State Naturalist Randy Hedgepath also joined us on the hikes.
